I was born and raised on a farm in Moody County, South Dakota where I currently live. I am the fourth generation to own and operate this 160 acre soil and water conservation award winning farm. My wife, Alice, and I have four children and two grandchildren. We are both retired and enjoy the beauty of living and working on our farm and participating in many church and civic organizations. I am very interested in providing a better environment and safer world for future generations.

I retired from the military two years ago after serving in the South Dakota Air National Guard for 35 years. I worked full time at the Guard Base for 25 years and attained the rank of Lt Col and a GS-13 Civil Service employee. I held leadership positions in several areas and retired as the unit’s Financial Manager.

I have been involved with natural resource conservation my entire life having lived and worked with my father who was an avid conservationist. After graduating from South Dakota State University with a B.S. degree in Mechanized Agriculture, I began working for the Minnehaha County Conservation District as the District Manager in 1974. I worked in this position for 7 years and was responsible for the day to day operation of the District’s business and working with farmers and homeowners in planning and establishing various natural resource conservation best management practices. I also assumed state and national leadership positions in natural resource conservation while working for the District.

I left the Conservation District to accept employment at the Air Guard Base but stayed involved in natural resource conservation as an assistant supervisor for the Minnehaha County Conservation District. I moved back to our family farm in 1984 to continue the conservation improvements that my father had started while he farmed the land. I was appointed to the Moody County Conservation District Board of Supervisors that same year. I have served as chairman of this board for the past ten years during which time the District has completed four small watershed implementation projects and are currently working on our fifth project to improve the water quality in the Big Sioux River in southeastern South Dakota.

As a Moody County Conservation District Supervisor, I felt a need to help others promote natural resource conservation throughout South Dakota. I was elected by my peers to serve on the South Dakota Association of Conservation Districts’ Board of Directors in 1988. I have served as president of our state association for the past four years. As president of the South Dakota Association of Conservation Districts, I represent the state on the National Association of Conservation Districts’ Board of Directors. In addition to this national position, I have served on the NACD District Operations Committee for the past 4 years and was the chairman of that committee this past year.

I was recently selected to represent the NACD Northern Plains Region on the NACD Executive Board. I will represent the states of Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas in this capacity. These six state conservation associations have identified the Missouri River sedimentation as a priority concern for the region.
